Happy fall, aka retrenchment season, when companies reevaluate their portfolios and cut costs to keep those end-of-year bonuses up! Amazon is already at it, scaling back plans after a summer of seemingly announcing a new warehouse every other week. The retail behemoth is shutting down delivery stations in Elgin and Mundelein and shelving plans for a warehouse in Crystal Lake and a distribution center in Hoffman Estates. This is, of course, after it’s already benefited from all that nice press about job creation.
Bed Bath and Beyond is also getting in on the action, closing six stores across Illinois as part of a restructuring.
As in many things, however, Amazon seems to be ahead of the back. UPS is planning to hire 8,000 full- and part-time workers in Chicagoland in preparation for the holiday season. And though the jobs only last through the busiest period, UPS does say around 35% of seasonal workers go on to get longer-term roles.
Law firms are also on a hiring spree, pretty much across the board according to Crain’s. The top 25 Chicago law firms by size are all adding to the ranks, with some, like Taft Stettinius & Hollister adding floors to accommodate all the new hires.
Employee engagement platform Culture Amp is also adding office space in Chicago, its third U.S.-based office. Even with the physical location, however, employees will be expected to work remotely on a hybrid schedule. Since Culture Amp’s job is to know what employees want, you’d think some might take that as a cue.
Healthcare patient platform Upfront, fresh off a $10.5 million raise, will be using its funding to fill new roles — and acquire competitor PatientBond — though no details yet on exactly how many people it plans to hire, or exactly what it might acquire next.
Jobs, Glorious Jobs
Information Architect for the Framework Data Group at Hubspot
We highlight this remote role for two reasons. One, it gives us an opportunity to recommend Disrupted to you all, one of the funniest books from the manic, mid-aughts tech boom. Probably read that before you think about applying for any job at Hubspot. Two, it lists an actual salary range, $196,000 to $245,000. That is a lot of money, in a world where compensation is rarely transparent and often biased. Nice to see!
Digital Creative Director at Under Armor
Another remote role, this time at a major consumer company where branding is quite literally everything. This role would lead design across all the company’s digital platforms, including the website and MapMyRun app.
Designer at Ritual Zero Proof
You'd be responsible for all the visual assets — from social media images to table tents — for the North Center-based nonalcoholic spirits brand. Work with the sales team as well as bar and retail customers, maintain the Shopify site, know a little front-end design. Sales of nonalcoholic spirits are outpacing booze by a lot rn, so spirit-free is a solid place to be.
Inspiration of the Week
“Removing my self-worth from achievement and ambition, from thinking what people in the ‘outside world’ think of me, has been life-changing”
—Angela Garbes in Essential Labor: Mothering as Social Change. What a title! Reimagining care work as something valuable, even revolutionary?
When tending to others is seen as a valid choice, ambition, achievement and all the rest of the external markers of success start to warp a bit. Just a delightful book for anyone who knows there’s a different way to live, but needs the proof.
